Beyond the Basics - Online class for Spiritual Directors
Includes learning, experiential practices, and an opportunity to receive a supervision session.
“So now that I have graduated, what’s next?” “ How do I stay connected with other directors and grow as a director?”
These questions frequently surface after our two-year training program ends and we have begun to offer spiritual direction.
This online class was created to provide continuing education for spiritual directors, while also including an experiential component. The class will include learning about several common topics that come up in our direction ministries, along with communal group discussions where we learn from one another. You will also enjoy a peer group supervision experience that will enhance your understanding, tools and skillset regarding this most important practice for us as directors. This peer group will be facilitated by a trained, vetted supervisor.
This is a great class for any Spiritual Director (including those trained as Ignatian directors), whether you’ve just been seeing directees for a little while or have been offering direction for years. Both beginning and advanced directors will benefit from the materials.
DETAILS:
Dates: Six sessions, every other Wednesday- June 4 and 18; July 2, 16, and 30; and August 13, 2025
9:30 – 11:30 am CT - Online via Zoom
Each session is 2 hours with a 10 minute break. The first hour is book discussion; the second hour is group supervision.
Required Resource: Our discussion will be based on the book Beyond the Beginnings by Janet K. Ruffing. Please purchase the book on your own and have the introduction and Chapter 1 read by the first class, June 4.
What we’ll learn:
We’ll begin with a brief discussion on the topic of the book’s chapter and learn from one another. This will also be a hands-on class where you will get to observe supervision in process and then have a chance to participate in it yourself. We hope each participant will sign up to receive one supervision session. We’ll talk about what we are learning in the book and then see if we notice those dynamics as they might appear in what we bring to supervision. Registration deadline is May 21, 2025 at noon. A minimum of 10 registrations are required for class to be held. A link to the online sessions will be emailed to you the day before the session.
